Our loose leaf Art of Tea Assam is a fine example of this much-loved Indian tea. Giving a deeply satisfying brew, this high-grade blend offers quintessentially bold and biscuity tones in a deliciously balanced cuppa. Our Tea Masters select handpicked ‘tippy’ leaves and buds to ensure the brew delivers both richness and complexity. Comforting and invigorating, our Art of Tea Assam is an excellent choice for a quality breakfast cup, or any time a fine, full-bodied tea is preferred.

The lush Assam valleys of India’s Brahmaputra river offer a rich and fertile terroir for tea bushes to flourish. Blessed with a tropical, rainy climate, and protected to the north by the Himalayas, the greenhouse-like conditions in Assam make it one of the most successful tea growing regions in the world. Assam’s tea bushes are harvested across four picking seasons between March and December. Known as ‘flushes’, each of these harvests offers teas of different character. For this blend, we only select teas from the second flush in the late spring, when the leaves offer the perfect balance of fresh taste and malty richness. The leaves are hand-picked, with just the precious top two leaves and the bud ‘tip’ being carefully plucked with each pass.

Once the tea leaves are picked, the skill of the Tea Master is vital in transforming them quickly into high quality tea. The leaves and buds go through a gentle bruising and withering process to encourage their oxidation stage – when they turn from lush green to the familiar dark brown colour. The Tea Master must carefully control this stage, which tends to happen through the night when the temperatures are cooler. Next, the leaves are rolled to release their precious inner juices, before the all-important drying and grading stages ‘fix’ the tea and lock in its flavours and aromas, to be released again once they’re steeped in your pot/cup.

For this blend, our Tea Masters select a premium grade of tea called ‘GFBOP’ (Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe) which includes larger leaf pieces and whole golden tips. There are also some smaller broken pieces that release their flavours a little faster – helping to give a deliciously balanced brew. This Assam steeps into a bright, glistening copper coloured liquor with gorgeous aromas of freshly baked biscuits and dark malt. We recommend brewing it strong and serving with a dash of milk. A spoonful of sugar brings out the tea’s natural sweetness when a more indulgent cuppa is preferred.

The Art of Tea range brings home some of the best teas from around the world, delivering both excellence and elegance to true tea lovers. Across this range we celebrate the art of the Tea Master: the unsung artisans who handcraft quality tea leaves into truly memorable brews. Luxurious on both sides of the tin, the Art of Tea range satisfies those with a taste for tea of character and quality. The exquisite aromas and flavours of these brews come solely from the best natural ingredients, crafted for excellence. We don’t add any flavourings or preservatives, letting the natural finesse of the ingredients and their origin shine through. You’ll see all whole leaves and tips in each blend, picked at their peak to deliver truly memorable brews.

Our luxurious Art of Tea Assam caddies are limited edition, so there’s only so much of this tea to go around. You’ll find 100 grams (g) of tea inside the pretty metal tea caddy, foil-sealed so it reaches you full of fresh flavour. Steep the tea with boiling water until you have a strong, dark infusion. Naturally rich in caffeine, Assam is perfect for a much-needed boost in the mornings – one of the reasons you’ll find it in most English Breakfast blends. Enjoy it alongside a hearty breakfast or sip as an afternoon reviver. Give a caddy to the discerning tea connoisseur in your life, or treat yourself to a tea-break upgrade while you have the chance. The pretty caddy is a fitting vessel for the fine blend within and makes a luxurious addition to any kitchen.
